Plan on attending the Session 1916 Hilton New York - Fourth Floor - Midtown Suite
@ 08/16/2004 (Mon) - 4:30 PM on SIMPLIFIED BACKUP STORAGE MANAGEMENT WITH UPSTREAM
RESERVOIR.
With the introduction at Long Beach 2004 SHARE conference of the UPSTREAM Reservoir,
Innovation Data Processing's FDR/UPSTREAM product expanded its reach far into the
enterprise with support for an extensive array of open systems tape drives.
A recent survey by the Aberdeen Group of more than 100 large IT users found
that the backup/restore process still brings the most storage related anxiety to
enterprise IT managers. To resolve this anxiety, this session will introduce and
explore the capabilities of the UPSTREAM Reservoir Storage Server that reduces the
complexity of the backup management process resulting in more manageable and
consistent operations. This session of the UPSTREAM Reservoir will detail how
this is done with UPSTREAM Reservoir facilities; such as silent installation,
email event notification, Reservoir's Dispatcher, its comprehensive integrated
job scheduler, and also an automatic upgrade capability. Discussion will also
include UPSTREAM's data reduction techniques that can facilitate large scale
backups reliably, but not at the cost of easy and consistent recovery.
If you cannot attend the SHARE Presentation and would like to receive a copy,
please call (973) 890-7300 or email
sales@fdrinnovation.com to request a copy to be sent to you.

INNOVATION introduces the latest open systems client version 3.3.1 of
the FDR/UPSTREAM family of products. This version features several new
enhancements to the UPSTREAM Suite of Products.

UPSTREAM DISPATCHER
The Dispatcher is the integrated event scheduler that allows,
under Director setup and control, a mainframe class scheduling system
from an UPSTREAM client system. The Dispatcher allows you to easily
manage and control your repeated backups and other operations simply.
The Dispatcher works with both the Reservoir (the non-mainframe backup
server) controlling scheduling events to the open systems backup server
and also FDR/UPSTREAM controlling scheduling events to the mainframe
backup server.
When used on a Reservoir system the Dispatcher supports USTBatch
that allows requests to be initiated with security pre-validated
and complete job detailed email notification.
To allow you to be able to easily manage and control your repeated
backups and other operations, UPSTREAM now includes an advanced
scheduler with the client software named the UPSTREAM Dispatcher.
It allows you to:
- Easily setup, add, delete and modify any number of backups and jobs
to be run repeatedly.
- As it is integrated in UPSTREAM, it allows easy setup of fulls and
incrementals and easily add or delete systems.
- Easy notification for success or failure of operations.
- Because it's controlled by the Director, can be setup or managed from
anywhere.
- You can run as many Dispatcher machines as you have UPSTREAM systems
or run a single centralized scheduler.
- Operates with either UPSTREAM/MVS or the UPSTREAM Reservoir. If you
run the Dispatcher on the Reservoir machine, you do not have to store
security information as it will implicitly use USTBatch. Because it
can run jobs, it can be used for Reservoir vaulting, migration or copying.
- Offers full control of scheduled operations including scheduled stop
and start of the Dispatcher itself.
Also included in the 3.3.1 client release are:
- Beta support for Microsoft VSS (Volume Shadowcopy Service) that are
backups of volume snapshots allowing backups of data consistent open
files as well as support of any compatible VSS writer.
- Updated installer. The UPSTREAM has been updated and now allows silent
installs. The silent installation will also be used in the client Automatic
Upgrade facility.
- Enhanced wildcarding. UPSTREAM will now accept the asterisk or question
mark wild card in any position in the file spec path. Wild cards that
are not at the end of the file spec will be expanded internally as separate
filespecs. For example: you could specify /home/a*/* would backup all
/home directories which begin with the letter ‘a’. If you
had 3 of these directories, UPSTREAM would generate 3 backup specifications.
Repeated parameters such as NFSBELOW, SINGLEFS, BACKUPREPARSEFILES,
etc. are respected. For UNIX, regular expressions can be used, for example
/home/[a-m]*/* and /home/[!a-m]*/* would represent two files specs which
would separate all files in the /home directory into two back ups.
- (DB2) Partitioned DB2 server support as well as support for 64-bit
AIX, Solaris and HP-UX.
- UPSTREAM will now perform log clearing as part of daily operations.
There is a new configuration parameter LOGDAYS to set the number of
days to preserve the log entries. UPSTREAM will perform log clearing
at the time it is started and every subsequent day at the same time
if this value is non-zero.
- A number of new UPSTREAM Reservoir features including USTBatch, XML
history
records and more.
UPSTREAM RESERVOIR
- A NON-MAINFRAME BACKUP SOLUTION
The new UPSTREAM 3.3.1 version features the open systems backup server release
of the newest member of the UPSTREAM family, UPSTREAM Reservoir.
The UPSTREAM Reservoir features centralized management
and control for fast, reliable operations for all systems, databases and
enterprise servers. The UPSTREAM Reservoir provides the
same comprehensive and rock solid client support as FDR/UPSTREAM in addition
to the online database agents.
The UPSTREAM Reservoir system is:
- Managed by the UPSTREAM “Director”,
JAVA and browser interface.
- Offers the UPSTREAM Dispatcher, an integrated
batch job and event scheduling system.
- The UPSTREAM Reservoir supports a wide variety of
disk, tape and robotic devices. Backup devices can be a single tape
drive, tape library, silo or disk arrays. The UPSTREAM Reservoir Backup
server can use any tape drive or library such as 9840, Magstar, DLT,
LTO, AIT and Ultrium.
- Provides the ability to backup to disk or tape, and provides the
option for data to be backed up to disk, staged from disk automatically
moved to tape.
- Provides very efficient tape stacking operations with Profile
Sets, taking advantage of the large capacity tapes.
UPSTREAM’s Reservoir provides the highest degree in flexibility
by allowing logically interchangeable tapes generated with the FDR/UPSTREAM
product for media that is compatible, and for tapes that are not capable
supports copying the backup data to a compatible
media.
